Thomas Haywood

Process

I use photography to explore the possibilities, and nature, of a common ground of experience with the viewer. The images are suggestive, without ever confirming, what is unfolding.

The different ideas I pursue in each series affect the nature of the portraits and the types of landscapes. In Family, there is little sense of my presence in the photographs, whereas in Family part II, my presence is key in the look and attitude of the sitters. In the Island series, with the exception of a sole protagonist, the subjects have been replaced by texts. The landscapes full of suggestive traces, shift from an associative, and emotional, reading of environments, to, in the more recent work, an exploration of the possibilities of visual metaphors and symbols.

Exhibitions

I graduated with an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art in 2008, and was awarded the Photographers' Gallery Prize. Recent group exhibitions in 2007 include 'Success/Failure,' at Photomonth in Krakow, Poland, and 'Mirror, Mirror,' at the Jerwood Gallery, London. In January 2008 I will be in a two person show at Standpoint Gallery, London.
